The Patrol Method

Organizing the Troop to develop future leaders

In our Troop, we employ the Patrol Method where “boys are leading boys under the guidance of adults”.  The troop is organized into patrols – Troop 803 currently has 3 Patrols:

1 New Scout Patrol

2 experienced Scout Patrols  6-10 boys in each patrol.

Here is how it works:

· 6-10 boys in each Patrol

· For new scouts, Troop Guides(TG) are appointed for new Scout patrols.

· Patrol Leader(PL) appoints his own staff

· Patrol chooses its own name

· Entire Scouting program is                               organized around the patrol

· Patrol Spirit is developed by doing things together

Activities for the Patrols are also determined by the Scouts and include

· Camping

· Cooking

· Hiking

· Instruction/Advancement

· Making Patrol Flag

· Patrol skits and cheers

Each Patrol has 2 Adult Advisors assigned to it

The Troop elects the top boy leader – Senior Patrol Leader and 2 Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders.  A third Assistant Senior Patrol Leader is assigned by the Scoutmaster to give another scout a leadership opportunity.  Normal duty of leadership positions is six months.
